The First Four Days

A lot has been going on these first four days of class at COSMOS.  Students learned Python - a programming language.  For many, it was the first time learning this language.  Our cluster is geared toward students who have no to little programming experience - especially in Python.  Students got a quick "crash course" to they will be able to create their own machine learning models.  It's been a lot, but they are getting more and more comfortable every hour!  It's really great to see the growth and perserverance and getting to know them.

They also got an introduction to ethics in STEM.  We heard from the Ethics Center about the different perspectives in ethics and how the dilemmas are weighed.  From there, they brainstormed a lot of different topics related to our cluster of machine learning, artificial intelligence and data sceince which have ethical issues.  Today, they presented their brainstormed ideas.  They will continue to explore ethics and next week create a video as a team further delve into a specific ethical issue and submit it as part of our COSMOS Ethics Video Contest.  The winning team for our cluster will be announced on closing day.

The students were a bit nervous but it was a great start to presenting to their peers today.  Below are their presentations.
